Welcome to Florida MedievaList
Written by james demilio

The Florida MedievaList is an organization of medievalists designed to promote teaching, research, and public programs on the Middle Ages in the state of Florida. We include faculty members, graduate students, librarians, and museum professionals, and we welcome anyone with a professional interest in the Middle Ages. We have a listserv and plan to hold meetings every fall and spring. Other initiatives include sponsoring sessions at national conferences, strengthening library resources in Medieval Studies, and expanding course offerings in Medieval Studies throughout the state.

CONGRATULATIONS! Carrie Benes, Assistant Professor of Medieval and Renaissance History, New College of Florida, has won the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Post-Doctoral Rome Prize in Medieval Studies to spend a year at the American Academy in Rome for her project, SPQR Transformed: Post-Classical Fortunes of a Classical Acronym.

Florida MedievaLists at Kalamazoo: Andrew Holt (Ph.D.  candidate, U. of Florida) has organized a session for the 43rd International Congress on Medieval Studies at Kalamazoo (May 8-11, 2008), "Holy War, Holy Women". Speakers include:
-James Rodriguez (University of Texas-Austin), "From Virgin Martyr to Warrior Saint: Shifting Conceptions of St. Marina of Antioch during the Crusades (1096-1291)"
-Charles Glasheen (University of North Florida), "Jewish Women and The First Crusade"
-Alan V. Murray (University of Leeds), "The Missing Women of the Baltic Crusades: Contrasting Issues of Gender in the Mediterranean and Baltic Fronts, 1096-1400"

Featured Website: Check out the website of the Abbey Library of St. Gallen, one of the most important collections of medieval codices, including more than 2000 manuscripts, 400 of them made before 1000 A.D. The collection offers a rare view of the contents of an early medieval monastic library and the activity of its scriptorium. 144 manuscripts have been fully digitalized with high-resolution color reproductions, and thorough catalogue descriptions.
